Driving here means multi-lane spiral roundabouts (Spaghetti Junction-adjacent routes, the Five Ways and Perry Barr islands), heavy bus-gate enforcement in the city centre, and the largest urban Clean Air Zone outside London. Test routes from Garretts Green and Kings Heath typically include a suburban dual carriageway stretch on the A38 or A45, a roundabout cluster, and at least one long residential zone. The examiner will want to see decisive lane choice well before each roundabout — hesitation on entry is a common local test fault.

Local tips

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the A4540 ring road and everything inside it. Lessons in CAZ-compliant cars are the norm, but learners practising in family cars should check the ANPR zone boundaries. Bus gates on Priory Queensway and Colmore Row are heavily fined — they look like normal roads until the camera catches you.
