Learning to drive in Cardiff

Cardiff learners get two quite different driving environments in a small geographic area. The A48 Eastern Avenue and the A4232 Peripheral Distributor Road are fast 50 mph dual carriageways with frequent roundabout exits, while the city centre (St Mary Street, High Street) is tight, one-way, and heavily bus-gated. Test routes from Llanishen cover the Llanishen reservoir area, a stretch of Lake Road East, and at least one of the roundabout clusters on the A48. Fairwater routes lean more on residential Cardiff West — Radyr, Whitchurch, Llandaff — with tighter streets and older road layouts.

Local tips

Wales moved most urban roads to 20 mph as the default in September 2023 — nearly every Cardiff residential street is now 20, not 30. Speeding faults have risen sharply in tests since then, particularly from drivers who learned pre-change. Assume 20 unless a sign says otherwise.
