Newcastle driving is shaped by the Tyne crossings — the Tyne Bridge, the Redheugh and the Swing Bridge all feed the same central grid, and getting lane discipline right on the approach is probably the single biggest skill you'll need. The Central Motorway (A167(M)) runs through the middle of the city and carries fast traffic with tight exits at Gallowgate and Swan House roundabout. Test routes from the Gosforth and Felling centres both include Central Motorway driving. Felling routes in particular push learners onto the A194(M) and the roundabouts at the Felling Bypass — long sight lines but heavy merge traffic.

Local tips

The Tyne Bridge inner city lane drops often catch people out — the left lane becomes left-turn-only at the last moment. Practise the Gateshead-side approach at off-peak times before attempting it in rush hour. The Swan House roundabout is on the standard Newcastle test route and has non-standard lane arrows.
