Driving Instructor Franchise Fees vs Going Independent: The Real Costs in 2026

Headline franchise fees in 2026 run from £75 a week at LDC to £201 a week or more at BSM and the AA, and one national school publishes no figure at all. None of those numbers compare, because each one bundles something different. Here is what each named school prints, and what going independent actually costs.

Headline driving instructor franchise fees in 2026 run from £75 a week at LDC to £201 a week or more at BSM and the AA, and one national school publishes no figure at all. BSM publishes a cut-down tier lower still, at £40 a week plus a lesson fee. Those numbers do not compare: LDC's excludes the car, RED's assumes you own one, and the AA's is mostly a car. Every school figure here is what that named school printed on its own page on 17 September 2026, and where nobody publishes a price, this article says so.

What the national schools publish

  • LDC, £75 a week, falling with service. LDC publishes £75 a week, then £66 after 12 months and £60 beyond 24 months. The car and insurance sit outside it, in what LDC calls a "completely separate" rental agreement.
  • RED, £99 a week, if you bring the car. RED Driving School publishes a Brand Franchise that "costs £99 per week" if you already have a suitable car. Its Full Franchise, where RED supplies the car, is the option carrying a "small bond", and it is not priced on the page.
  • BSM, Partner from £201 a week, Solo from £181. BSM adds a £180 non-refundable admin fee, a £170 refundable deposit and an annual mileage allowance of 48,750 miles.
  • AA, all-inclusive from £201 a week, solo from £181. AA Driving School publishes the same £180 admin fee and £170 deposit as BSM.
  • Bill Plant, a weekly fee with no figure on it. Bill Plant publishes a "Fixed Franchise Fee", "Paid Weekly", covering a Volkswagen tuition vehicle, insurance and servicing. No number appears; you must "Request more information".

BSM's own instructor jobs page says the Partner fee "starts at £194 for a 24-month contract", not the £201 on its franchise page, and adds a Partner Lite at "£40" a week plus "a 10% lesson fee for pupils introduced by BSM". Get your own fee in writing.

A fee you cannot compare is not a price

BSM's own solo car lease page shows how much of a bundled fee is the car: a dual control vehicle, instructor insurance, breakdown cover and 48,750 miles from "£181" a week, and no pupil introduction listed.

Three questions decide it:

  • Are the car and its insurance in? Both in at BSM and the AA, both separate at LDC, already yours on RED's £99.
  • Are pupils in? The AA gives "pupil enquiries from The AA" on all-inclusive only, BSM makes pupil introduction Partner-only, and LDC says "most work will come direct to you".
  • Is the fee payable in a week you do not teach? No page checked answers this.

The terms that cost more than the fee

LDC publishes the shortest tie-in. The first month is free if you trained with LDC, it costs "an extra £500 to join LDC if you train elsewhere", and after qualifying "you need only stay for 5 months" then give "one months notice". LDC contrasts that with "12 - 36 months as with most others", its own characterisation of rivals.

BSM publishes a 24-month contract, with notice 12 weeks prior to end of term. Its £180 admin fee is non-refundable and the £170 deposit is refundable "subject to terms". The AA publishes the same £180 fee and £170 deposit, and no notice period. RED's bond has no published figure at all.

Get four things in writing before you sign:

  • What the fee covers.
  • Whether it is charged in weeks you do not teach.
  • The minimum term and the notice you must give.
  • What happens to your pupils if you leave.

Going independent: the bill, line by line

  • Car. Dualdrive publishes leases from £449.99 inc. VAT per month for a Toyota Aygo X hybrid automatic, and £669.99 for an MG4, both "includes maintenance". Other models on the same listing cost more. Dual controls and insurance are not mentioned.
  • Dual controls. He-Man Dual Controls publishes no prices, nor does approved fitter BAS (NW) Ltd, which offers "Bespoke quotations". Supply and fit is quoted per vehicle.
  • Insurance. Adrian Flux publishes no premium, because the cost "depends on a number of factors". It prices only add-ons: public liability at £19.99 for £2 million and £27.50 for £5 million, and breakdown "from just £68". The page gives no period for any of the three.
  • DVSA. First badge £300, registration 4 years, renewal £300, per GOV.UK, plus a criminal record check at £5.40, and £12 to verify at a Post Office, per GOV.UK.
  • Bookkeeping. FreeAgent lists a sole trader plan at a standard £19 a month excluding VAT, currently half price for six months, and free with some bank accounts.
  • Marketing. There is no budget figure here, because the only marketing channel this article cites is free. GOV.UK's find-an-instructor service is opt-in: ADIs "choose whether or not to be on this service".

Tax and admin you take on yourself

Going independent means trading as a sole trader, says DVSA's ADI register guide. HMRC requires Self Assessment registration once you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year, and records from the day you start trading. VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover for the last 12 months passes £90,000, per HMRC. Insurance, advertising, website costs, refresher training and fuel are allowable expenses, per HMRC.

Then the mileage trap. Simplified rates for 2026 to 2027 are 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p after, up from 45p and backdated to 6 April 2026, per HMRC. You cannot use them on a vehicle you have claimed capital allowances for, and once chosen for a vehicle you must keep using them, per HMRC.

What the numbers say about how instructors work

DVSA's 2025 instructor survey, published 25 February 2026, is the only independent picture: 68.2% independent, 18.2% on a local school franchise and 11.5% with a national school, from 3,448 responses out of 43,334 ADIs. On rates, 50.3% charge £36 to £40 an hour and 29.1% charge £41 or more. A weekly fee does not flex with your diary: 13.1% work 15 hours or fewer, 56.6% work at least 25.

The survey holds no income data, so no honest take-home comparison exists. RED cites FBTC's 2024 Driving Instructor Review, a third-party survey, for a rate that "now exceeds £37 per hour". A school's own earnings example is a claim about itself: LDC's example of 36 hours at £38 leaves £1,076 a week before tax. That is LDC's own net figure, and the page does not say what it deducts to reach it, so it does not match the hours multiplied by the rate. LDC says it "would probably be unrealistic to expect" that in the first year.

Rules that apply whichever you choose

Independent, you carry the ADI code of practice yourself. Advertising "shall be clear, fair and not misleading", and claims must be "capable of verification". Your terms of business must give your legal identity, full postal address and telephone number, lesson prices and duration, cancellation and refund terms, and a complaints procedure. Money paid in advance must be safeguarded and accounted for.

Test booking is not a choice. Since 12 May 2026, per GOV.UK, "It's now against the law for you or anyone else to book a test for your pupils", including changing, swapping and cancelling. Send pupils our guide to booking your own driving test.

Where LeapFrog fits, and where it does not

Quick answers

Is a driving school franchise worth it? No published figure answers it, because no two schools price on the same basis. Price the car, the insurance and the pupil supply separately.

What is the cheapest published franchise fee? BSM's Partner Lite at £40 a week, on BSM's own jobs page, and it adds a 10% lesson fee on pupils BSM introduces. The cheapest headline fee is LDC's £75 a week, which excludes the car and insurance. The cheapest fee is not the cheapest week.

What does it cost to go independent? Per GOV.UK, the only fixed DVSA figures are the £300 badge every four years, the £5.40 criminal record check and £12 to verify your identity. The car, the dual controls and the insurance are all quoted per vehicle or per driver.

Do I pay the fee in a week I do not teach? No school page checked answers this. Ask in writing, alongside the minimum term and what happens to your pupils if you leave.

Can my school book my pupil's driving test? No. Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book, change or cancel a test.
