How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Birmingham in 2026?

Five Birmingham driving schools publish a price on a public page, and their standard manual rates run from £32 to £35 an hour. Here is what those pages showed on 17 September 2026, what block bookings really save, and the DVSA fees you pay yourself.

Birmingham driving schools that publish a price list show standard manual lessons between £32 and £35 an hour. That is £32.00 at Birmingham Driving School and from £35 at Bill Plant Driving School, on the prices those pages showed on 17 September 2026. Bill Plant states it has no set Birmingham price, so treat £35 there as a floor, not a ceiling. Your theory and practical test fees are separate, go straight to DVSA, and you pay them yourself.

What an hour of driving lessons costs in Birmingham

Of the Birmingham driving schools we checked, five publish a figure on a public page. These are the prices each page showed on 17 September 2026.

  • Birmingham Driving School: £32.00 manual, £36.00 automatic, on its published price list.
  • Think Safety Driving School: £34 manual, £35 automatic, and £33 and £34 under the student and NHS discount on its pricing page.
  • Result Driving School: £33 to £35 manual, £35 to £40 automatic, "depending on the area and availability", on its Birmingham lesson prices page.
  • RSM Driving School: £35 an hour, listed identically under both manual and automatic on its Birmingham and West Midlands price page.
  • Bill Plant Driving School: from £35 for one hour, with "2hr Lessons Starting From £70!" on its Birmingham page.

Those pages carry their own caveats. Think Safety states prices "may differ based on your location". Bill Plant states: "We do not have a set price for driving lessons in Birmingham. All Bill Plant instructors are in control of their own diaries and set their own driving lesson prices." So treat each figure as that provider's published starting point, not a fixed city rate.

Two more national schools we checked publish no Birmingham hourly rate. The AA asks for a pickup location before it shows lesson prices. RED Driving School's Birmingham page gives percentage savings on 10, 20 and 30 hour blocks but states no hourly rate at all. There is no official average lesson price for Birmingham, and we have not invented one.

What block bookings actually save

Less than most learners expect. The per-hour maths below is ours, applied to each provider's own published prices.

  • Birmingham Driving School: 10 hours at £310.00 is £31.00 an hour, and 50 hours at £1,510.00 is £30.20 an hour, against its £32.00 hourly rate.
  • Think Safety: 5 hours manual at £165 is £33 an hour, against £34 paid by the hour, and nothing at all against its £33 student and NHS rate on the same page.
  • Result: 5 hours at £170 and 10 hours at £340 both work out at £34 an hour. Its manual block list says these are "Available for £35/hr lessons only", so the saving is £1 an hour. Under its automatic prices it adds that "Block bookings are not available in all areas".
  • RSM: the same £170 and £340, so also £34 an hour, against its listed £35.

A bigger block is not automatically a cheaper hour. Work out the per-hour figure before you pay several hundred pounds in advance. Check whether the money is refundable if you move away or change instructor.

Automatic usually costs more, and the gap varies

The premium is not consistent across Birmingham. Birmingham Driving School charges £4 an hour more for automatic. Think Safety charges £1 more. Result's automatic range tops out £5 above its manual range. RSM publishes the same £35 for both.

The fees you pay yourself, direct to DVSA

These never appear on a driving school invoice. GOV.UK's driving test cost page lists a £23 theory test, a £62 practical test on a weekday and £75 in the evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday. It warns that unofficial websites usually charge more. Before any of that, a first provisional licence costs £34 online, or £43 by post, per GOV.UK's provisional licence guidance.

Since 12 May 2026, only you can book, change or cancel your test. DVSA's press release of 12 May 2026 states that it is against the law for third parties, including driving instructors, to make bookings for someone else. Instructors may still advise you on when you are ready and support you throughout. Book the test yourself at gov.uk.

The Birmingham costs people forget to budget for

  • Use of the car on test day. This is car hire plus a lesson, not a booking service. Think Safety charges £115, which "includes the lesson before, use of the car on the test and return journey back home". Result Driving School's test-day package "starts from £120". Birmingham Driving School lists three hours covering a 1.5 hour lesson, the test and the return journey at £96.00 manual or £108.00 automatic.
  • Mock tests. Think Safety lists two-hour mock test assessments at £68 manual and £70 automatic.
  • A retest. Another £62 or £75 to DVSA, and GOV.UK's guidance on failing says you must choose a date at least 10 working days away. Most learners keep taking lessons across that gap.
  • A theory pass that runs out. GOV.UK's theory test result page says your pass certificate number lasts 2 years, after which you pay the £23 again.

Two worked Birmingham totals

Both are arithmetic on the published figures already cited above. Neither is a quote.

A 30-hour manual block. Birmingham Driving School lists 30 hours at £918.00. Add a £34 provisional licence online, a £23 theory test and a £62 weekday practical test, and the total is £1,037.00.

A 20-hour intensive course. RSM Driving School lists a 20-hour course under Intensive Driving Courses at £1,070, which is £53.50 an hour. That is a different product from the hourly lessons and blocks above, not a cheaper version of them. Its page says packages include "expert tuition, free learning materials, and mock test practice", and its published list of inclusions does not mention the DVSA test fee. Add £23 theory and £62 weekday practical, and the total is £1,155, assuming you already hold a provisional licence.

Neither total includes a retest, mock tests or test-day car hire, which Birmingham Driving School lists separately at £96.00 manual. Neither assumes a number of hours you need. Use the package length your instructor recommends after an assessment.

Why the wait for a test changes what you spend

A long wait is lesson hours you keep paying for to stay sharp. In August 2026, median waits between booking and test ran from 3.1 weeks at Birmingham (Cocks Moors) to 23.0 weeks at Birmingham (Kingstanding), per DVSA's table DRT122F. The Great Britain median that month was 11.1 weeks and the West Midlands median 12.1 weeks, per DVSA's table DRT121G.

How LeapFrog's launch prices compare

LeapFrog has not launched and is not open for bookings. Everything below is a launch price on a published page, not a price you can pay today.

Straight answer: higher per hour than every standard hourly rate above. LeapFrog's pricing page, read on 17 September 2026, shows a flat £47 an hour for manual and £50 for automatic once you select the automatic option. Manual packages run from £470 for 10 hours to £2,256 for 48 hours, and automatic from £500 to £2,400.

That page sets out what the flat rate will include at launch: one price with no volume tiers to decode, and a 45-day instructor match guarantee. Test Booking Assist is listed free on every package. It is guidance on when and how to book, never the booking itself. The page also lists Klarna in three payments on packages of £700 or more.

Against the standard hourly rates above, that is £12 to £15 more an hour. It sits below the £53.50 an hour that RSM's 20-hour intensive course works out at, so it is not the highest per-hour figure in this article. Whether the flat rate and what comes with it is worth that is your call, and the figures above are there so you can make it.
