Learning to drive in Edinburgh

Edinburgh driving is shaped by the Old Town's medieval street layout and the narrow setts on routes like Cowgate and Grassmarket. Most daily driving happens on the New Town grid (George Street, Queen Street) and the bypass (A720), but the test routes pull in at least one cobbled stretch and one of the city's busy tram-shared junctions around Princes Street, York Place and St Andrew Square. The Currie and Musselburgh test centres sit on opposite sides of the bypass. Routes from Currie tend to use the A720 for fast dual carriageway practice; Musselburgh routes fold in coastal A1 driving through Portobello.

Local tips

Edinburgh's tram runs on-street down Princes Street and through York Place. On-road tram signals use a white-bar aspect rather than the standard red/amber/green — the bar's orientation tells the tram when to proceed — so don't expect to follow the tram's light as a driver. Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone has been enforced in the centre since 1 June 2024; check the lesson vehicle's compliance.
