Learning to drive in Glasgow

Glasgow's grid-pattern city centre looks forgiving on a map but carries heavy bus, taxi and cycle traffic, tight one-way systems (Bothwell Street, West George Street) and the elevated M8 running right through the middle with short in-city slip roads at Charing Cross and Kingston Bridge. The test routes out of the Anniesland, Baillieston and Shieldhall DVSA centres all include at least one stretch of motorway-standard dual carriageway. Glasgow also operates a Low Emission Zone covering the city centre, enforced since June 2023 for private cars. Practising the Kingston Bridge approach and the M8 Charing Cross slip in light traffic before your test is worth an extra lesson.

Local tips

Glasgow's LEZ has been enforced on private cars since 1 June 2023 — non-compliant vehicles caught by ANPR inside the zone face a £60 penalty (doubling with each repeat). Lesson cars are compliant, but a parent's older car may not be. Bus-gate cameras on Union Street and Oswald Street catch frequent first-time-driver fines.
